Porcelain statuette of Taras Bulba.

Object history

This statuette of Taras Bulba, a Ukrainian legendary hero, was presented by representatives of the citizens of Kyiv (Kiev) to a group of 80 British librarians on a study tour of the then countries of Czechoslovakia, Ukraine and Soviet Russia during September and October 1965.

The leader of the tour, on behalf of its organising committee, asked Hackney's Music Librarian to accept the statuette for the Music Service, as Taras Bulba was immortalised in stories and music.

The tour leader said to the organisers of the Kyiv reception committee that this momento now given to Hackney would serve as a permanent reminder of the friendliness and hospitality extended by the citizens of Kyiv to the British librarians on their visit.

The Music Librarian brought it back to Hackney, arranged for a letter expressing the Council's thanks for the gift, planned to put it on display at a relevant Council meeting and then to place it on exhibition at Stoke Newington Art Gallery.
