Hackney Museum
Hackney Museum opened in 1987 at Hackney Central Hall, Mare Street – now the Picturehouse cinema. By telling the history of Hackney it aimed to explain how the area was so diverse, sharing its long history of migration and settlement. In the first month there were over 100 visitors a day.
This rent book for a property on Dunlace Road, Clapton, is the very first object in the museum collection. As part of a set showing rising rents in the area from 1931 to 1963, it reflects housing concerns still shared by many people living in Hackney today.
