Object history

Angela Davis was a prominent counterculture activist and radical in the 1960s. As leader of the Communist Party USA she had close relations with the Black Panthers and was involved in the civil rights movement. She was twice a candidate for Vice President of the USA in the 1980s representing the Communist Party USA.

In 1986, Hackney Council's Race Relations Women's Unit held a series of events linked to International Women's Week under the theme "Women of Strength, Voices of Struggle." This included inviting Davis to give a lecture at Hackney Town Hall, which the Hackney Herald reports attracted a crowd of thousands.

In her speech, Davis said "The most important challenge facing us, is that of building bridges and establishing coalitions between those fighting for women's equality, racial equality and economic justice."

Exhibition Label

"I admired Angela Davis when I was younger. Growing up in Hackney, I read her autobiography in the early 1990s which I borrowed from a friend.

I first discovered that she came to Hackney to give a talk at the Town Hall in 1986 while reading one of Andrea Levy's novels, 'Fruit of the Lemon'. In 1986 I would have been in my early teens so would I have come to see her? Who knows but it would have been great if I did!"
