From the exhibition 'Pubs, Clubs & Carnivals: An exhibition about pleasure and leisure in Hackney' [21 June - 3 September 2016]
Kitty Daines
Catherine Ellen Daines, or ‘Kitty’, lived at various addresses in Hackney. She was a keen photographer and made photo albums of her holidays during the 1930s. Like most people at this time, she visited coastal places within Britain such as Torquay in Cornwall.
Popular overseas tourism began during the 1950s and especially the 1960s, as travel by airplane became more accessible and ‘package tours’ helped people explore destinations like the Alps or the Mediterranean. In her suitcase Kitty brought back souvenirs from her exotic European adventures.
