Object history
This poster was produced by Hackney Council's publicity team. It was in response to Michael Heseltine, then minister for the environment in Margaret Thatcher's conservative government, stopping work on housing improvements and the payment of grants for house repairs in Hackney due to concerns of council's overspending on housing.
Hackney Council argued this made the situation much worse for the 18,000 families then on the housing list for the borough. It took a combative stance towards the minister, using the front cover of the council produced Hackney Herald newspaper to describe him as 'penny-pinching' and being "Government's Mr Scrooge".
This poster won an annual design competition by the Local Government Public Relations Association in 1981.
