Learning the trade

The prestigious Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney taught students about leathercrafts like shoe and boot making.

Cordwainers Technical College was established in 1913 on Bethnal Green Road. In 1946, the college moved to 182 Mare Street. It was later expanded and modernised. In August 2000, Cordwainers was incorporated into London College of Fashion.

Cordwainers are highly skilled crafts people, renowned for their high quality products which are usually made from leather. The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers started the college and had strong ties with the shoe industry so many students went on to work in the trade for decades.

Courses on offer to students included footwear design, footwear production and bag making as well as more unique subjects like saddlery.

On display are pages from a portfolio belonging to a Cordwainers student who attended the college in 1996. The photographs and notes are part of a Higher National Diploma award.
