Object history

This flyer most likely commemorates the Battle of Cable Street which occured on the 4th October 1936.

Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists organised a march through Jewish communities such as Bethnal Green and Shoreditch. They were met with a counter-demonstration of both organised and unorganised groups. These included trade unions, anti-fascists, British Jews and communists.

Sara Wesker - who is listed on this flyer as a speaker - was a Jewish trade union leader and communist who was active in Hackney in the 20th century. Wesker is known for being a prominent figure at the Battle of Cable Street as well as a leading trade union organiser. She was involved in the 1928/29 Rego and Polikoff strikes as well as a strike at Simpsons Clothing Factory in 1933.
