Physical Description
Roll of rectangular black textile, embroidered with gold, white and light blue thread. Iridescent teardrop shaped sequins are sewn into the embroidery. The textile is probably wool. There is a handsewn 'A' in the bottom right corner of the textile, potentially in reference to the name of the owner. This textile was framed and displayed in the owners home, which has caused some sun bleaching.
Object history
During the early 20th century, this textile was given as a gift from Reverend Sydney Addison Marsh (St Phillips, Richmond Road) to Alice Mabel Davis (Née Caterer). Alice would often volunteer at St Phillips Church, Dalston and it is thought that this textile was given as a gift to Alice to thank her for her help at the church. Marsh is believed to have been previously been in the army so it is possible that he acquired this textile when travelling in the East, perhaps in India.
Alice passed the textile on to her daughter, Augusta. Later in life, Augusta had the fabric framed and displayed in her home.
