Object history

In early 2020 the Hackney Brocals were working with artist Angela Groundwater on a piece with them about their struggles with isolation and loneliness and the steps they were taking to combat it.

The introduction of a national lockdown in response to the Coronavirus pandemic created an unprecedented threat of loneliness as the bros stayed at home alone. Throughout the rest of 2020 the men shared their personal stories of lockdown with Angela and one another over Zoom, asking: What had they been doing? How had they been coping?

The results are these custom-made wallpaper designs that weave together the men’s memories, histories and treasured possessions, to create a portrait of a year unlike any other.

Shoreditch Lockdown

I spend most of my time at home. I like living on my own - in fact I appreciate it more now.

I haven’t seen anyone, except a volunteer, who’s now gone back to Sweden. I go for walks...I live in Shoreditch.

My favourite pubs are the Wenlock Arms and the Artillery Arms, which are now closed.

And I’m not that keen to sit back inside a pub anyway, right now!

I regularly fall asleep in front of the TV on my sofa.

I have my favourite beer glass from a festival. I remember staggering home with it, not wanting to break it. What I most like is how it feels: it’s lovely and heavy.

My mother decided to get a big display cabinet to store all the glassware they got for their 30th wedding anniversary. It’s massive.
