'Strong Black Woman' is the last release by reggae and lovers' rock singer, Joy Mack. Mack was a successful singer during the 1970s and 1980s. Her first performance was at the Four Aces club in Dalston. Throughout her career, she also worked in cultural education and community organisations.
In an interview conducted by Hackney Museum in 2018 Mack commented on the theme behind the album; 'Strong Black Woman' is about her goal to "rise up [my] black women and motivate them". The songs are inspired by a trip to Ethiopia that Joy Mack took in March 2018 - she was involved in community work, inspirational speeches, school visits and charity work. "I'm a humanitarian person...I like to help my people and see how they live. And the situation is similar" said Mack "black woman struggle is hard".
