Physical Description

Circular metallic badge with white lettering on red background that reads 'ilea protect our education'. The 'l' from the word 'ilea' constitutes the staff for a waving white flag with a red x in the middle.

Object history

The badge is part of a campaign aimed to save I.L.E.A. (Inner London Education Authority) which, between the 1965 and 1990, was the local education authority for the City of London and the 12 Boroughs of London.

ILEA fought off multiple attempts to abolish it (1981 and 1983), but the local governments were considered unprepared to handle the education services on their own. Eventually, two years after the Education Reform Act 1988, and with GLC dismantled in 1986, ILEA was officially abolished in 1990.

Personal experiences

“ILEA was a brilliant body and we're still suffering from the lack of it. The whole principle of it; richer boroughs paying as it were for poorer boroughs through a centralised team, really worked. Throughout London and they had a lot on, they had an incredible resource for teachers.

Some of the ILEA teams that I got to know were creative people, risk takers, and they were just doing lots and lots of things all over London. ILEA was involved in every aspect of of children's work, not just schools, but also play. They did Victoria Park up with all the very long tremendously long slides, and using water and things like this.”
