Object history

This badge was produced by the Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign, and was worn by Hackney activist Ian Rathbone.

After the overthrow of the Somoza dictatorship in 1979, the United States viewed the rise and actions of the left-wing Sandinista government in Nicaragua as a move towards communism. In 1981 U.S. President Ronald Regan authorized funds to recruit, train and arm an insurgent paramilitary army ‘the Contras’. The resultant civil war killed thousands.

Following the democratic election of Sandista candidate Daniel Ortega Saavedra to president in 1984, the U.S. government declared a trade embargo on Nicaragua, with disastrous consequences for the economy resulting in reductions in programs tackling health, housing, education and nutrition.

In 1986, The United Nation’s International Court of Justice found the United States guilty of violating international law by supporting armed Contra rebels in Nicaragua.
