Physical Description
Small circular badge with a white background and a black text in capital letters reading 'CDS Nicaragua Libre Poder Popular', with C.D.S. being the acronym for Comités de Defensa Sandinista (transl. Sandinista Defense Committees). The minimal design sees the letters CDS becoming the stylised bodies of three people raising their left arms and fists.
Object history
This badge was worn by Hackney activist Ian Rathbone. It was probably distributed in the UK by those showing solidarity with the left-wing Sandinista government in Nicaragua following the 1979 revolution, and in response to the United States’ trade embargo and arming of counter revolutionaries (the ‘Contras’).
CDS refers to Comités de Defensa Sandinista (Sandinista Defense Committees). These were neighbourhood committees, many formed during the revolution, that mobilised mass support for the party and assisted government programs.
