Object history

This flaming tree shaker was grown and made in Tanzania. Freddy Macha used this as a percussion instrument when he performed at Hackney-based schools.

Born in Tanzania, Freddy Macha toured the world playing music. While living in Brazil, he came to the UK as part of his music tour in the 1990s. He officially moved to Stoke Newington in 1996.

Freddy’s skills as a performer took him to many organisations including primary schools across Hackney, like William Pattern in Stoke Newington. He teaches children spoken-word poetry, sings in his native language, Swahili and plays percussion. The children learn to sing, dance and narrate stories using the songs that Freddy teaches them.
