Physical Description
The circular badge, commissioned by n.a.l.g.o. (National and Local Government Officers' Association, 1905-1993), invites people to vote for GLC. The red, black and white illustration of a ballot and the text 'London's right to vote!' suggest nalgo's support to GLC.
Object history
This badge was owned and worn by local activist Ian Rathbone.
In 1983 the Conversative Government committed to abolishing the Greater London Council as "a wasteful and unnecessary tier of government". The GLC, trade unions and community groups protested against losing the right to vote for a local GLC councillor.
Although the GLC was not due to be abolished until 1986, the government cancelled the 1985 GLC elections. A campaign was launched against this removing the rights of Londoners to vote in the running of the GLC and Inner London Education Authority (ILEA).
