This badge was owned by Peter Kahn, a Hackney resident involved in the East London 'Troops Out' movement.
Eight days after the bombing to two pubs in Birmingham in November 1974 attributed to the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) that killed 21, the Prevention of Terrorims Act (PTA) came into force granting the home secretary and police new powers. This granted the Home Secretary the power to ban organisations and deport individuals suspected or terrorism to Ireland or Northern Ireland. Police could detain people on suspicion for 48 hours.
Of the 5896 people arrested under the PTA between 1974-1984, almost all were Irish.
