Object history
This badge was owned by Hackney resident and Labour party member Peter Kahn. It relates to the June 1975 Referendum on the European Community (Common Market).
Two years after joining the European Economic Community (EEC), the Labour central government called the UK's first referendum, asking the voting public “Do you think the United Kingdom should stay in the European Community?” Both the national Labour Party and the Hackney Community were split on the issue, with MP for Hackney Central Stanley Clinton-Davis and Hackney Trade Council campaigning for 'No'. In May, a rally for staying out of the common market was held on the town hall steps, followed by a march through Hackney and Shoreditch to Finsbury Square before joining a demonstration in central London.
Nationally, over 67% of votes were 'Yes' on staying within the common market.
