Personal experiences
Shared by Ian Rathbone, local activist involved with the 'Save Hackney' campaign
"So as we got into 1986 it really started to be like, you know, we've got to fight to save Hackney Council, we’ve got to fight to save Hackney. So we had a campaign which was called Save Hackney campaign, which used to do some interesting things… Make posters as well, used to plaster the front of the town hall with posters during the night, stuff like this. It's all, you know, quite exciting.
We were mostly campaigning to try to fight to save the council. Save the council in the sense that we wanted to see them make a stand against Thatcher. So we're quite political, I mean you wouldn’t get any of that today. You wouldn’t get the grants, but in those days we did.
We were trying to give support to councillors to be brave and stand up against Thatcher, and against rate capping. Because obviously it wasn't just about we just want to set a rate in defiance of authority. It was actually about setting a rate that covered the cost, because it would have meant the budget would have to be cut.
So the Save Hackney campaign had its effect I think. I think it made people think about their Borough, it made people realise that if you want something, you've got to fight for it. You know you can't just sit in a chair and let somebody else do it."
