Object history

British Nationality Act 1981 was an act of Parliament that changed who was considered a British Citizen, and how citizenship could be acquired. It was introduced in response to popular opposition to immigration from Commonwealth countries.

Following the act coming into effect in 1983, children born within the United Kingdom were no longer entitled to citizenship unless at least one parent was already a British citizen.

The act also repealed the 1948 British Nationality Act and abolished all previous categories of citizenship, including that on which the rights of those who had moved from Commonwealth countries had been dependent. The left them with an unclear citizenship status that left them vulnerable to future legal developments, leading to what became known as the "Windrush Scandal" in the 2010s.
