Object history
The Hackney Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) designated a week from 26 May 1984 as Hackney Peace Week. This week was chosen to be in the lead up to the that year's European elections and the visit to the UK of US president Ronald Regan.
Events were organised across the borough by the CND. These included film screenings at the Rio Cinema, public meeting at the Hackney Town Hall Assembly Room on 'Europe & Disarmament', and a cabaret performance at the Crown and Castle pub in Dalston. There was a street ballot on the Trident nuclear weapons programme in Stoke Newington.
Some women from Hackney that had joined the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp outside the RAF base Berkshire, established a temporary women’s peace camp in front of Hackney Town Hall for the week (a similar 24 hour camp had been held outside the Town Hall earlier that year on the 29th of February).
