Object history

Moses Mayekiso was general Secretary member of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and an executive member of the Congress of South African Trade Unions. Mayekiso became a leading spokesman for the view that black workers should take the lead in the anti-apartheid struggle and in the future of South African society. In 1987 he along four others were arrested for high treason. Strikes in South Africa called for their release, alongside an international campaign to force the South African government to set Mayekiso free.
