Object history
As part of the wider “Winter of Discontent”, the National Union of Public Employes (NUPE) campaigned for a basic wage of £60 for a 35 hour week. This included an ‘all out’ strike of all NUPE members nationwide on 22 January 1979. Soon after, Hackney binmen joined an indefinite strike in support.
