Object history
By 1981 more than 2.5 million people across the UK were out of work, following the decline in manufacturing and industrial sectors. Inspired by the famous 1936 Jarrow March, around 500 unemployed people, mostly in their late teens and early 20s, protested against unemployment by taking part in a month long march between Yorkshire, Liverpool and London. The march ended with a rally of 150,000 people in Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square. This badge was owned and worn by Hackney activist Ian Rathbone.
