Object history
This badge belonged to Hackney based union activists Mary Pimm and Nik Wood
In 1983, more than three million people in the UK were unemployed. In the mid-1980s one in five adults in Hackney were unemployed. This People's March was organised by the TUC and took place between April and June 1983, starting in Glasgow and moving through the North West of England before ending in a rally in London. A similar march had taken place in 1981. Both were inspired by the famous 1936 Jarrow March protest against unemployment.

Personal experiences
Experience shared by Nik Wood, a Hackney based civil servants and union activist:
It was based on the old Jarrow March of the 1930s, as a big demonstrative thing about what was at the time rocketing unemployment, and understandably terrible employment conditions when you could get a job. So there was a big march to try and get things done, and it converged from all over.
We went on the London Day of it. It didn’t come through Hackney, we picked this badge up in Brockwell Park.
It was a demonstration that didn't really achieve very much. But it holds the organisation together, it keeps our politics moving.
