Object history
This badge was owned by Hackney resident and councillor Peter Kahn. 'IKTOF' likely refer to The Federation of Turkish Students in the UK (IKTÖF - İngiltere'deki Kıbrıslı Türk Öğrenci Federasyonunun).
Following the independence of Cyprus from Great Britain in 1960, years of the "divide and rule” policy between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots of the colonial years left a legacy of conflict between the two communities of the new republic. In 1974, following a Greece backed coup against President Makarios, Turkey invaded Cyprus and occupied a third of the island in the north, declaring it the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Between 6000-9800 were killed in the conflict, and 250,000 displaced.
