Object history
These eel drawers used to be part of the famous F. Cooke's Eel Pie and Mash Shop at 9 Broadway Market (closed 2022). They were kept in the back of the shop to house live eels with a continuous flow of fresh water running onto them from a water tank above to keep them alive and fresh.
The eels would have been made into stewed or jellied eels, a popular side or snack in East London pie and mash shops.
