Boot, Dalston, 1980s

During the mid to late 20th century, Hackney was a central location for shoe making in the U.K. This footwear sample comes from London Lane Shoes which opened in Haggerston in the 1960s and later moved to 1 Downs Park Road, Dalston. They made women’s shoes for shops across London.

London Lane Shoes’ owners were the Rubin family, who came from a long line of shoemakers. In 1895, Morris Rubin came to London from Lithuania and started his own shoe making business in Whitechapel. His son and grandson, Daniel, went into the shoe making industry and ran London Lane Shoes.

The company eventually closed down in 1986 due to competition from overseas manufacturers. London Lane Shoes still exists under new management in Leicester. Today, Daniel Rubin runs the footwear company Dune.
