Object history
"Hackney: a radical socialist borough" was a slogan and identity adopted by Hackney Council in 1983. The previous year had seen the election of a staunchly left wing Labour council led by Anthony Kendall which was vocally opposed with the then Conservative national government's policies on public spending and rate-capping.
The slogan was used to advertise jobs for Hackney Council during 1983-4. It is unclear whether this badge was produced by Hackney Council, or by those questioning whether the local authority really lived up to this identity.
