Rectangular portrait yellow paper with black printed text on both sides. One side is the terms of the agreement and the other side is specific information for the agreement with wet ink filled in sections. This is a duplicate of the original agreement which would have been kept by the vendor.

Object history

This hire purchase agreement was issued to Kidar Singh Sharma (Jamdagni) as he entered into an agreement for a McMichael's radio in 1955, four years after moving to Hackney. As electrical goods such as radios and TVs were slowly introduced to the retail market, they were still quite costly. Purchasing an item on hire purchase meant you could pay a number of instalments over a period of time to pay off the cost of the item rather than have a huge outlay, but this also cost more. The full cash price for the radio was £22 1s, and the hire purchase price was £23 16s.
