Physical Description

Portrait, cream, rectangular paper, c. A5 sized. Headed paper with company name and address printed on top followed by a series of fields, denoted by dotted lines, to be filled in. Right side has three columns to put in currency. All printed elements are in black ink. Handwritten wet ink elements are in blue ink. There is a brown postage stamp two third of the way down the page.

Object history

This receipt was issued to Kidar Singh Sharma (Jamdagni) for a black and white V310 Murphy TV in 1957, six years after moving to Hackney and two years after purchasing a radio. As electrical goods such as radios and TVs were slowly introduced to the retail market, they were still quite costly, as shown by this receipt. The TV cost £72 19 shilling and 6 pence. He paid a £30 deposit. See 2024.141 for the TV guarantee.
