Physical Description
Black and white portrait rectangular photograph with a thin white border. The photograph shows a South Asian man wearing a dark coloured kurta with a Nehru collar and seven button, reaching his knees. His hat seems to be a matching colour as his kurta. He is wearing plain white loose fitting trousers which gather at his ankles and a pair of closed shoes. In his left hand he is holding a folded piece of paper and has a pen in his kurta top. He is standing on the pavement with a tree behind him and a car besides him with the door slightly open.
Object history
This photograph of Devi Pershad Pandit may have been taken close to their home on Pedro Street in Clapton as the housing behind on the left of the image looks similar. The car in the photo also appears in another photo, possibly featuring his brothers (see 2024.150), outside the company factory.
Devi Pershad Pandit's clothing choices suggest he was in support of India's independence movement with his Nehru collar and Gandhi 'topi' (hat).
