South Asian woman wearing a gingham checked dress which comes below her knees, sitting on a chair in a photo studio. Her hair is below her chin, possible in a net or similar. Both has hands are on her lap and she is holding a page in her left hand. She may have bare legs. She has placed her feet in a pair of laced up brogues.
Object history
Bhagwan Devi Pandit travelled to London in 1946 with her sons, to join her husband Devi Pershad Pandit. This photograph was take the following year in 1947 as a studio close to her husband's business on Balls Pond Road.
It's not known whether she wore western clothing frequently or not. The heel of her left foot is not fully in the shoe, suggesting they may not have been her shoes, or she may have had an issue putting them on.
