Object history
Hackney's fighting back! was a campaign launched by Hackney Council in 1985 in response to rate-capping laws introduced by Margaret Thatcher. The campaign was confrontational in tone and directed to the prime minister, such as through t-shirts reading "You've got our backs up Maggie!"
Leader of the council Hilda Kean said of the campaign 'We really have reached the crunch as far as this Government is concerned, and local people just have to get together and fight to protect services which we cannot afford to lose. Only through a concerted borough-wide campaign - uniting people, unions and community groups - can we hope to drive home to Mrs Thatcher that we're not prepared to sit back and see her damage the services which have taken years to build up.”
