Object history
This badge was made by the Council of Civil Service Unions, in the context of employees of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) from joining trade unions. It references the title of the popular TV show 'Yes, Minister'/ 'Yes, Prime Minister.' This badge belonged to Hackney based civil servants and union activists Mary Pimm and Nik Wood.
Personal experiences
Experience shared by Mary Pimm and Nik Wood, Hackney based civil servants and union activists:
In GCHQ they banned trade unions and offered people £1,000 as compensation. But there were people who refused and battled on about it for years and years. Every Union saw it as a threat to them. I mean, if they could get away with it here, I know it's only one Civil Service place, but it's bad news for everybody. When it happened we were really worried about the rest of the Trade union movement, you know, would they support us? But they did. This badge is saying no, we're not having you taking our union rights away.”
