Object history
This badge was worn by Hackney activist Ian Rathbone. It was probably distributed in the UK by those showing solidarity with the left-wing Sandinista government in Nicaragua following the 1979 revolution, and in response to the United States’ trade embargo and arming of counter revolutionaries (the ‘Contras’).
It refers to the educational project of 'educational brigades' formed in 1984 to continue the primary training of children from communities in war zones, in particular during the Nicaraguan revolution (1979-1990). The '50th Anniversary' brigade was formed in 1984 of 1,500 young people with the aim of tackling illiteracy in rural areas.
