Object history
This badge was owned and worn by Hackney activist Ian Rathbone.
In 1982, GLC declared London a 'Nuclear-free Zone.' and during the following year, known as 'GLC Peace Year 1983,' organised events and campaigns highlighting different nuclear issues.
One of these issues was the transport of nuclear waste by rail through London, and the safety risks to residents from accidents or terrorist attacks. Four different designs of billboards placed around London invited people to ‘spot the nuclear train.’ One of these featured a photograph of one of these trains crossing the Hackney Central bridge over Mare Street.
