Object history
The badge is part of a campaign aimed to save I.L.E.A. (Inner London Education Authority) which, between the 1965 and 1990, was the local education authority for the City of London and the 12 Boroughs of London.
ILEA fought off multiple attempts to abolish it (1981 and 1983), but the local governments were considered unprepared to handle the education services on their own. Eventually, two years after the Education Reform Act 1988, and with GLC dismantled in 1986, ILEA was officially abolished in 1990.

"So Thatcher, part of her battle was, first of all, to basically get the GLC closed, which caused horrendous disruption to local government. And then further in 1990 by abolishing I.L.E.A, Inner London Education Authority. Almost that was worse. I was involved in that fight, I mean I was a governor of a school, in a chair of governors at a school in Hackney.
We were fighting like crazy to try and stop it, because it was wonderful. The I.L.E.A was such a wonderful organisation. It just did so many things because it was London wide, it had London resources. So the richer boroughs could help the poorer boroughs. It was literally the rich helping the poor kind of principle. And she abolished it."
