Object history

In 2010, photographer Colin O'Brien exhibited a collection of images at Chats Palace, an arts centre and theatre in Hackney. The exhibition showed photographs of people and the shops they worked at, owned or visited on Chatsworth Road.

O'Brien documented the changing shops and communities on Chatsworth Road - as well as Hackney in general - during his expansive career as a photographer.

The exhibition ran from 8th October to 27th November 2010.
Originally opened in the 1960s as an Italian cafe and ice cream factory, Jim's Cafe was run by Dave. Dave passed away in 2008 and the cafe closed for several years.

In 2017 it was taken over by 'Black Skulls' a motorcycle and clothing brand. The new owners kept much of the original decor inside which had a typical 1960s diner-like aesthetic. It continued to serve food but one review in the Hackney Citizen mentions its 'hipster' style and another article writes that the renovated café 'reflected the modernising, gentrifying headwind of pockets of Hackney generally and Chatsworth Road'.

Jim's Cafe closed permanently in March 2022.
