Object history

Altun Food Store was a grocers and off licence which was located at 34 Chatsworth Road. The man shown is Timur, who had recently taken over running the shop. For the previous three years the shop had been run by Hassan and his children Fatima, Bayrum and Morat. Fatima had moved to the UK c. 2002 from Gaziantep, Turkey. Altun Food Store has closed since this photo was taken, and a Turkish restaurant called Pivaz opened at the address.

This photo is part of a series that featured in the exhibition ‘Last of the Real High Streets’ held in 2010 at Chats Palace, an arts centre and theatre in Hackney. The exhibition captured the changing shops and communities on Chatsworth Road, and included the stories of people written by travel writer Jane Egginton.

Fruit and Veg

Timur, (above) has just taken over the very popular fruit and veg shop that has been running for over 30 years. It's a hard job, working 18 hours a day. He gets up at 2am every day except Sunday to go to Spitalfields Market, stacking shelves until 11am. Sometimes he can have a bit of a sleep at the back until 3pm if his wife comes over, otherwise he works right through until 8pm.
