Object history

The shop featured in this photo is The Bookbox, a bookshop selling books for both adults and children. In this image, the shop is at 53 Chatsworth Road. The shop has also been located at 68 Chatsworth Road.

This photo is part of a series that featured in the exhibition ‘Last of the Real High Streets’ held in 2010 at Chats Palace, an arts centre and theatre in Hackney. The exhibition captured the changing shops and communities on Chatsworth Road, and included the stories of people written by travel writer Jane Egginton.

Book Box

The owners of the bookshop, the Book Box, live above the shop. Downstairs is a ceramics cafe, where customers can paint their own pottery while indulging in ice cream, cup cakes and milkshakes. It was an old fashioned barbers before it became a book shop and before that was Vanderbilt, the butchers.
